The Dark River to Antares

NASA APOD · Jason Jennings
COSMIC MESSAGE

A dark cloud, known as the Dark River, flows across this region, connecting the Pipe Nebula to the bright star Antares. This murky appearance is caused by dust obscuring background starlight, though the nebula itself is mostly hydrogen and molecular gas. Antares, a red supergiant, is surrounded by dust that reflects its yellowish light. Above it, the blue double star Rho Ophiuchi is embedded in another colorful nebula.
