The Horsehead Nebula

NASA APOD · Nigel Sharp
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Horsehead Nebula, Barnard 33, is one of the most recognizable nebulae in the sky. It is a dark, cold cloud of dust silhouetted against glowing hydrogen gas in Orion. The red glow comes from hydrogen ionized by the bright star Sigma Orionis, which sits behind the nebula. The Horsehead's darkness is caused by thick dust, which also casts a shadow.
