Jupiter's New Impact Scar

NASA APOD · Anthony Wesley
COSMIC MESSAGE

Fifteen years after Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter, another impact scar appeared. This one was discovered by amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley from his home observatory in Australia. The impactor left a dark mark against Jupiter's cloud bands, near the south pole. This event reminds us that our solar system is a dynamic and active place.
