COSMIC MESSAGE
The Gum Nebula is so large and close to us that it is hard to see. It is a cloud of glowing hydrogen gas, about 450 to 1,500 light-years away. This 41-degree wide mosaic of H-alpha images shows the faint emission region, which is otherwise lost against the background of Milky Way stars. The nebula is thought to be a supernova remnant over a million years old.
