The Star Pillars of Sharpless 171

NASA APOD · Nicolas Outters (Observatoire d'Orange)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Towering pillars of cold gas and dark dust dominate the star-forming region Sharpless 171. An open cluster of stars is currently forming here from dense molecular clouds. As light from young, massive stars erodes the dust, these pillars emerge and slowly evaporate. The energetic light also makes the surrounding hydrogen gas glow red.
