Earthshine Moon over Sicily

NASA APOD · Dario Giannobile
COSMIC MESSAGE

We can see the entire face of this crescent Moon due to earthshine. Earthshine occurs when sunlight reflects off Earth and illuminates the part of the Moon not directly lit by the Sun. When the Moon is a slim crescent from Earth, the Earth appears nearly full from the Moon, making the earthshine brightest. This phenomenon is also called the Da Vinci glow.
