COSMIC MESSAGE

M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a large spiral galaxy about 170,000 light-years across, almost twice the size of our Milky Way. It is one of the last entries in Charles Messier's catalog of celestial objects. This infrared view from the Spitzer Space Telescope shows starlight in blue hues and the warm dust where new stars are forming in green and red. M101 is about 21 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
