Dark Sand Cascades on Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These dark brown streaks on Mars might look like trees, but they are not. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed them on melting pinkish sand dunes covered with light frost. This image was taken in April 2008 near Mars's North Pole. Dark sand on the interior of Martian sand dunes became visible as the spring Sun melted the lighter carbon dioxide ice, sometimes cascading down the dune.
