The Flame Nebula in Infrared

NASA APOD · ESO
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Flame Nebula, fifteen hundred light years away in Orion, glows in infrared, looking like a cosmic fire. This isn't fire, though. The bright star Alnitak, in Orion's Belt, shines energetic light into the nebula. That light knocks electrons away from hydrogen gas, causing the nebula to glow.
