Large Eruptive Prominence Imaged by STEREO

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Last week, our Sun produced one of the largest eruptive prominences ever seen. NASA's twin Sun-orbiting STEREO satellites captured this event in movie form. A quiescent solar prominence is a cloud of hot solar gas held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field. These prominences can unpredictably erupt, expelling hot gas into the Solar System via a Coronal Mass Ejection.
