Ash and Lightning Above an Icelandic Volcano

NASA APOD · Marco Fulle
COSMIC MESSAGE

Why did the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland create so much ash? The Eyjafjallajökull volcano began erupting in March, with a second eruption starting under a glacier in April. Neither eruption was unusually powerful, but the second one melted a large amount of glacial ice. This generated a significant ash plume that drifted across populated areas.
