Shapley 1: An Annular Planetary Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

When a star like our Sun runs out of nuclear fuel, its outer layers are expelled into space, forming a planetary nebula. Shapley 1 is one such nebula, named after astronomer Harlow Shapley. It has a distinct annular ring structure. Though some planetary nebulae look like planets, they are actually gas shells around dying stars.
