A Picturesque Venus Transit

NASA APOD · David Cortner
COSMIC MESSAGE

The rare transit of Venus across the face of the Sun in 2004 was one of the better-photographed events in sky history. Scientific images confirmed that the black drop effect is better related to the viewing clarity of the camera or telescope than the atmosphere of Venus. This image captures the event, as seen from Earth. The transit offered a unique opportunity to study Venus's atmosphere.
