Edge-on NGC 3628

NASA APOD · Stephen Leshin
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 3628 is an edge-on spiral galaxy, about 100,000 light-years across and 35 million light-years away in Leo. Its puffy galactic disk is divided by dark dust lanes, giving it the nickname "The Hamburger Galaxy." NGC 3628 is part of the Leo Triplet, a group of three large spirals. Gravitational interactions with its neighbors have likely influenced its distinctive shape and dust lanes.
