Light Echoes from V838 Mon

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 2002, the star V838 Mon suddenly expanded, becoming the brightest star in the Milky Way, then faded. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows a light echo, where light from the flash illuminates surrounding dust. The light appears to expand outward, but it is actually light reflecting off different parts of the dust cloud.
