Asteroid 2005 YU55 Passes the Earth
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Asteroid 2005 YU55 passed Earth in November 2011, safely inside the Moon's orbit. The space rock, about 400 meters across, was the largest to pass this close since 1976. While smaller rocks pass Earth frequently, one this size is rare. If YU55 had struck land, it could have caused a magnitude seven earthquake and a city-sized crater. This close approach allowed astronomers to study it in detail.
