COSMIC MESSAGE
At over 5,000 meters, the Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes offers an incredibly clear night sky. Its high altitude and dry atmosphere make it ideal for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or ALMA. ALMA's 7 and 12-meter dish antennas explore the universe at wavelengths thousands of times longer than visible light. This unique location allows astronomers to study the cosmos in ways not possible from lower elevations.
