Shell Galaxy NGC 7600

NASA APOD · Rancho Del Sol Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

Elliptical galaxy NGC 7600, similar in size to the Milky Way, is about 160 million light-years distant in the constellation Aquarius. This deep image reveals a remarkable outer halo of nested shells and broad circumgalactic structures. These features are consistent with the accretion of dark matter and stars over cosmic timescales. The galaxy's formation can be simulated using cosmological models.
