Caught in the Afterglow
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This illustration shows two distant galaxies, formed about two billion years after the Big Bang, caught in the afterglow of a gamma-ray burst. The burst, GRB090323, was detected by the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope in March 2009. By analyzing the afterglow spectrum, astronomers inferred the alignment of the burst with its host galaxy and another nearby galaxy. Observations from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope helped confirm this distant view.
