Shuttle Plume Shadow Points to the Moon

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The shadow of a space shuttle plume can point toward the Moon if the Sun, Earth, Moon, and rocket align just right. This photo, taken during a launch of Atlantis in early 2001, captures such a coincidence. For a long shadow, the launch must occur near sunrise or sunset. At Full Moon, the Sun and Moon are on opposite sides of the sky, creating the necessary geometry.
