The Case of the Missing Supernova Companion

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

At the center of supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5, the companion star to the exploded star should be found. Identifying this star is crucial for understanding how Type Ia supernovae detonate. This knowledge is key to calibrating the brightness of these explosions, which in turn helps measure the expansion of our universe. However, even with careful inspection, no star has been found at the remnant's center.
