Saturn's moon Iapetus has a strange appearance, with vast sections as dark as coal and others as bright as ice. The dark material's composition is unknown, but infrared spectra suggest it contains a dark form of carbon. Iapetus also has an unusual equatorial ridge, making it look like a walnut. The Cassini spacecraft flew within 2,000 kilometers of Iapetus to study this painted moon.
