The Opposing Tails of Comet Garradd

NASA APOD · Robert Plzl
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Garradd has two tails. The dust tail, on the left, is composed of ice and dust bits that trail the comet in its orbit around the Sun. The ion tail, on the right, is composed of ionized gas blown directly from the Sun by the solar wind. Most comets show two tails, but it is unusual for them to appear to point in nearly opposite directions, as they do here.
