AR1520: Islands in the Photosphere

NASA APOD · Alan Friedman
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sunspots are dark, planet-sized islands in the Sun's bright surface, the photosphere. They are cooler than the surrounding plasma and are anchored in magnetic fields. This close-up photo shows a group of sunspots within active region AR1520, which spans nearly 100,000 miles. An X-class solar flare and coronal mass ejection recently erupted from this region.
