The Medusa Nebula

NASA APOD · Ken Crawford
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Medusa Nebula, also known as Abell 21, is an old planetary nebula in Gemini, about 1,500 light-years away. Its braided, serpentine filaments of glowing gas are the result of a star like our Sun transforming from a red giant to a hot white dwarf. This phase is a final stage in the evolution of low-mass stars.
