The Gegenschein Over Chile

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky (ESO)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The gegenschein, a faint glow in the night sky, is visible directly opposite the Sun. This phenomenon is caused by sunlight scattering off tiny dust particles in the inner solar system. These particles are typically millimeter-sized asteroid fragments, orbiting within the ecliptic plane. This image, taken over Chile, captures one of the more distinct views of this subtle celestial light.
