A Quadruple Lunar Halo Over Spain

NASA APOD · Dani Caxete
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Moon, framed by not one, but four halos, glowed over Madrid, Spain. These halos are formed when moonlight refracts through hexagonal ice crystals high in Earth's atmosphere. The brightest halo, a 22-degree arc, directly surrounds the Moon. This rare quadruple display shows the complex ways light interacts with atmospheric conditions.
