NASA APOD · A. Dimai, (Col Druscie Obs.), AAC
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Hale-Bopp, the Great Comet of 1997, displayed two distinct tails. The blue ion tail, made of charged particles, was pushed directly away from the Sun by the solar wind. The white dust tail, composed of larger dust grains, followed a more curved path. This photograph captures it over the Dolomite mountains in Italy.
