This photo captures the Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan erupting, with lightning bolts near its summit. Hot magma bubbles shoot out as liquid rock bursts through the Earth's surface. While the cause of lightning in common thunderstorms is still a research topic, the reasons behind volcanic lightning are even less understood. This image was taken in early January.
