Cape York Annular Eclipse

NASA APOD · MWV Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The New Moon's shadow crossed Queensland's Cape York in northern Australia, creating an annular solar eclipse. The Moon's apparent size was too small to completely cover the Sun, revealing a 'ring of fire.' This telescopic snapshot, taken with a hydrogen-alpha filter, captures the dramatic annular phase. It was captured near mid-eclipse from Coen, Australia.
