Strawberry Sun

This striking, otherworldly scene is a view from Earth, showing an ochre sky and a strawberry-red sun. The photograph was taken on August 22, 2013, near Strawberry, California, about 30 miles north of the Rim Fire's origin. The extensive smoke plumes from the wildfire, easily visible from space, scattered sunlight in a way that produced these dramatic colors when viewed from within the plumes.
