The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, is the most distant object visible to the unaided eye, 2.5 million light-years away. This image, taken from Italy, shows the faint smudge of Andromeda near the top center. Most other visible celestial objects are much closer, within our own Milky Way Galaxy.
