This sungrazer comet was captured by the SOHO spacecraft's LASCO instrument as it arced toward the Sun. LASCO uses an occulting disk, partially visible at the lower right, to block the Sun's overwhelming light. This allows it to image the inner 8 million kilometers of the faint corona. The comet's coma is seen entering the bright equatorial solar wind region.
