Cap Cloud over the Sierra Nevadas

NASA APOD · Guido Montas
COSMIC MESSAGE

This unusual cap cloud formed over the Veleta peak in Spain's Sierra Nevada mountains. Cap clouds form when air is forced upwards by a mountain, cools, and condenses into droplets. This particular cloud appeared bell-shaped, which is uncommon since air usually moves horizontally. The photo was taken at sunset in January, creating a dramatic silhouette.
