Sun and Prominence

Dramatic prominences, clouds of solar gas held above the Sun's surface by its magnetic field, are sometimes visible just beyond the solar limb. This image, taken in a specific hydrogen light, shows a large prominence extending from an active region. The foreground reveals a waving sea of hot gas in the chromosphere, with Earth shown to scale for comparison.
