A Circumhorizontal Arc Over Ohio

NASA APOD · Todd Sladoje
COSMIC MESSAGE

A circumhorizontal arc, sometimes called a fire rainbow, stretches across the sky over Ohio. This colorful optical phenomenon is caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. For it to appear, the Sun must be high in the sky, at least 58 degrees above the horizon. The ice crystals must also be aligned horizontally.
