COSMIC MESSAGE
The Horsehead Nebula, or Barnard 33, is one of the most recognizable nebulae in the sky, part of a large, dark molecular cloud in Orion. Its unusual shape was first noted on a photographic plate in the late 1800s. The red glow behind the nebula comes from hydrogen gas ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The Horsehead's darkness is due to thick dust, which also casts a shadow from its lower neck.
