M6: The Butterfly Cluster

COSMIC MESSAGE
To some, the open cluster of stars M6 resembles a butterfly. Also known as NGC 6405, it spans about 20 light-years and lies approximately 2,000 light-years distant. M6 can be seen with binoculars in a dark sky towards the constellation Scorpius. It covers about as much sky as the full moon and is composed predominantly of young blue stars, though its brightest star is nearly orange.
