Plato and the Lunar Alps

NASA APOD · Richard Bosman
COSMIC MESSAGE

This sharp image highlights the 95-kilometer-wide crater Plato and the sunlit peaks of the lunar Alps. Earth's Alps formed from colliding continental plates, but the lunar Alps likely resulted from the impact that created the Mare Imbrium, or Sea of Rains. The smooth, lava-flooded floor of the mare is visible below the mountain range.
