W5: Pillars of Star Formation

NASA APOD · : Francesco Antonucci
COSMIC MESSAGE

The W5 star-forming region, seen here in infrared by NASA's WISE satellite, shows clues about star formation. Massive stars in the center of empty cavities appear older than those at the edges. This suggests the older stars trigger the formation of younger ones by compressing gas.
