The Flame Nebula in Visible and Infrared

NASA APOD · Optical (RGB+Ha): Aldo Mottino & Ezequiel Bellocchio (Argentina); Infrared: ESO/J. Emerson/VISTA.
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Flame Nebula, about 1,500 light-years away in Orion, glows from energetic light from the star Alnitak. Alnitak, the easternmost star in Orion's Belt, ionizes the hydrogen gas in the nebula, causing it to emit light. The dark lanes are dust clouds obscuring the light behind them.
