Unusual Light Pillars over Latvia
NASA APOD · Aigar Truhin
COSMIC MESSAGE
These strange columns of light over Sigulda, Latvia, are light pillars. They form when falling ice crystals reflect light from bright sources on the ground. This image, taken with a digital camera in late 2009, shows the pillars fanning out at the top. The air was very cold and filled with small ice crystals.
