Our Galaxy's Magnetic Field from Planck

NASA APOD · ESA/Planck; Acknowledgement: M.-A. Miville-Deschnes, CNRS IAS, U. Paris-XI
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Milky Way Galaxy is permeated by a magnetic field, which aligns small dust grains and scatters background light. The Planck satellite mapped this field in high resolution, confirming that the galaxy's interstellar magnetism is strongest in its central disk. This 30-degree wide map shows the field's structure.
