The Whirlpool Galaxy, M51, is a pair of interacting galaxies. The larger spiral galaxy, NGC 5194, shows well-defined spiral arms and dust lanes that sweep in front of its companion, NGC 5195. This galaxy pair is located in the constellation Canes Venatici, and is a popular target for amateur astronomers.
