Milky Way with Airglow Australis

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky
COSMIC MESSAGE

After sunset, the sky can sometimes glow with airglow, a phenomenon similar to aurorae but caused by chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere. This exceptionally intense, reddish airglow was captured over a Chilean winter night. It ripples across the northern horizon, flanking the Milky Way, in atmospheric waves.
