A Giant Squid in the Flying Bat

NASA APOD · Steve Cannistra
COSMIC MESSAGE

Toward the constellation Cepheus, two faint but large nebulae are visible: the Giant Squid Nebula (Ou4) and the Flying Bat Nebula (Sh2-129). The Squid Nebula, discovered in 2011 by Nicolas Outters, shows a bipolar shape distinguished by its blue-green hue. This telescopic view, combining 20 hours of data, spans nearly 4 degrees, or eight times the width of the Full Moon.
