COSMIC MESSAGE

Dark nebulae like LDN 988 are places where new stars are forming, about 2,000 light-years away. Beverly T. Lynds cataloged these clouds in 1962 using plates from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. This optical view shows the irregular shapes of dust and gas, which absorb visible light from background stars. Near-infrared observations reveal energetic outflows from the dozens of newborn stars hidden within.
