These two large galaxies, Arp 87, are merging, a process that will eventually destroy them. A cosmic bridge of stars, gas, and dust stretches between them, evidence of violent gravitational tides. The spiral galaxy on the right, NGC 3808A, shows many young blue star clusters, a result of new star formation.
