Accelerating a charge produces light, but accelerating any mass produces gravitational radiation. While light is common, directly detecting gravitational waves has been challenging. The Advanced LIGO detectors, shown here, are designed to sense the tiny jiggle in spacetime caused by these waves, which are generated by powerful astronomical events.
