A Heart Shaped Lenticular Cloud

NASA APOD · Michael Kunze
COSMIC MESSAGE

This heart-shaped lenticular cloud appeared above Mount Cook National Park in New Zealand. Lenticular clouds form when stable, moist air flows over a mountain or range, creating standing waves. The cloud's red color in the image is from the rising Sun, a fleeting effect that made it look like a Valentine's Day greeting.
